The question has finally been answered. I guess they have no one to call on home phones anymore, so now they're moving on to cell phones. :P Figured I'd post this in all the forums I'm in so people can register as soon as possible and not waste cell phone minutes. From the Depew Bee (a small newspaper in NY)...

Cell phone numbers can now be released to telemarketers, who will then have the ability to call consumers. In order to prevent these unwanted calls, call the federal Do Not Call list at (888) 382-1222.

To register a cell phone number on the Do Not Call list, simply contact the 888 number using the cell phone to be registered. That cellular phone number will then be enrolled for a five-year period on the national registry.

Home phones may also be registered through the number.

You can also register online at https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx

does that 5 year limit affect home phones listed when the list first came out?

i am starting to get telemarket home phone calls again

I'm pretty sure it does. Also, there's a loophole: any company that has had prior business with you is allowed to telemarket you unless you explicitly tell them you don't want any more calls. For example, you have a credit card with Chase, Chase can telemarket you.

i knew about those loop holes and was very carefull to shut them officially years ago with a supervisor on each call

i believe the limit was 18 months from the last official contact for business

Question: How the hell do these comanies that use telemarketing make their money? Who is picking up the phones when they know it's a salesmen and who is buying this crap?

Auto-dialers make it cheap - they only put a human on the line after a) they get someone to answer and b) they don't immediately hang up.

It's like all forms of mass marketing (junk mail, spam, &c) - enough idiots buy something after being contacted that it remains profitable.

A DNC registry only makes it MORE profitable, by eliminating even the infinitesimal cost of someone who won't be interested.

My company has always telemarketed to customers who provide cell phones as their primary number. But we only call customers, so hey.

I worked for a telemarketing company for a couple days, they told us on the first day of training: "If you get an old or young person, or someone who doesn't sound like they speak good english, try to get them to sign up. Tell them you can send them the information for them to read at leisure or discuss with their husband"

The thing these people didn't realize was that the second you signed up for the info, you were enrolled in the program and charged. And if you didn't call within 2 wks/30 days AND EXPLICITLY STATED YOU WANTED YOUR MONEY REFUNDED, they would be charged monthly fees and/or have the subscription cancelled but not recieve any money back.

Yeah, I quit that job FAST and didn't get ANY sales

I didn't say "who don't speak english good", I said "who don't speak good english". There's a difference.

I'm using 'good' to describe 'english', not to describe the people. Like saying someone speaks broken english.

And I refuse to speak correctly if it's something that I think sounds stupid. Like saying "Yes" instead of "Yeah"...it sends shivers down my spine and sounds so forced, arrogant, and just doesn't sound right to me.

oh and they make their money by sheer volume, the idea is if 1:10000000 people buys some junk then clearly 2:20000000 will, so all you do is crunch the numbers until you make a profit.

same as spam really, only you need a bit more brains about where you call etc because it costs more than $0 to send out.

See, that's the kind of stupid stuff I'm talking about. I still won't stop using "speak good english" in favor of "speak english well" because...well...that just sounds really weird and akward to me. I really hate the english language, its so screwed up, and there aren't any rules...it's like having 1 million people get together and create their own languages, and then mush it all together, throw in some rules that contradict themselves or are true most of the time, but not all of the time, and there you have it: The English Language

P.S. You should write to the editor of the newspaper and tell them they could be more thorough in fact-checking. But hey, at least this one isn't harmful like with CBS or Newsweek.

I actually missed the part about you saying it was in the paper, so had to add this. And I will leave my earlier faux pas because it's a silly, harmless mistake, no need to cover it up. I have integrity.
